| | | Maverick's Exhibit San Mateo County History Museum, Redwood City, CA
Maverick’s is a big wave surf break off the coast of Half Moon Bay. Known as the most consistent paddle in, big wave surf spot in the world, this exhibit immerses visitors in the story of its discovery and the surfers who continue to be challenged by it. A rock wall and 13’ tall fiberglass and resin wave greets visitors as they enter. A 3 screen video describes the steps surfers go through when surfing Maverick’s, from the 1/2 mile paddle-out, to the drop into the wave, the ride and the inevitable wipe-outs. A timeline interprets the history of the wave, starting with the Ohlone history in Half Moon Bay, to its first being surfed in 1975 through the current, biggest swell days. Visitors stand on an actual board near a window overlooking the plaza in front of the Museum, 40’ below, analogous to some of Maverick’s biggest waves. The main feature of the exhibit is Waverider. Located inside the barrel of the wave, visitors stand on a surfboard and ride a virtual wave. Sensors within the board measure balance and stance, eliciting a live reaction on a large screen. A successful ride takes the visitor past maverick’s infamous rocks and toward a cheering crowd on shore.
